On Willow Trees
historical map, documents, and photographs. Mathilda Rosengren, 2021.
.
In 1954, botany professor Henning Weimarck and his teenage son Gunnar embarked on a journey across Scania to map its threatened cultural and natural landscapes. In Malmö, they documented the remains of old willow trees lining the roads at the city's periphery. In 2021, I photographed the sites where Weimarck's willows once stood. Each historical photograph is put in dialogue with a photograph from the same place today. In some places, the willows have disappeared due to infrastructural developments. In other places, remnants of willow lines can be sensed in a few trees.
